Large area avalanche photodiodes with high quantum efficiency and extended UV response
Scintillators with fast decay time, such as the barium fluoride fast component (220 nm) or liquid xenon (165 nm) pose a difficult problem for photodetectors. This motivates the development by a Caltech/JPL/RMD collaboration of large area (~10×10 mm) avalanche photodiodes using superlattice doping. These devices have high quantum efficiency and extended UV response and excellent timing properties. They also incorporate an interference filter to discriminate against the slow decay time component of barium fluoride.
