Description
A new table top mirror machine was built in order to research ways to mitigate the
flute instability prevalent in these machines.
One previously researched method for accomplishing this is using oscillatory fields in the ion cyclotron frequency range. Several mechanisms were suggested to stabilize the system. These include either single particle pondermotive forces, macroscopic forces or shear flow generated due to radial gradients in the plasma.
The machine is one meter long with 1 Tesla mirror fields. Hydrogen plasma is heated using ion cyclotron RF fields. A description of the system and diagnostics, preliminary results and a review of these mechanism are presented.
