Description
This paper presents the development of a new data acquisition meta-system software (meta-DAQ) for experimental setups in particle physics, ηDAQ. “Meta-” means that it provides high-level functionality only and can be integrated into a custom-built DAQ system with detector specific readout, data transport and event building, regardless of whether they are implemented mainly in software or in FPGA-based hardware.
In a large HEP experiment, the shift crew often has to deal with the inevitably complex DAQ process, which combines unique hardware with sophisticated networking and computing facilities for data preprocessing and logging. The presented software aims to provide a simplified model of an actual DAQ process for a particular experimental setup. It includes a modern user interface for run control operations and for planning a run schedule in advance with chosen configuration presets.
ηDAQ works by monitoring the state of involved system components and by keeping a track of the processed chunks of data. This metadata is logged and represented on a live dashboard. It also provides a single source of truth for all subsystems through an integrated REST API.
